Maybe I'm just missing something

Why is it that kindergarten seems to be the 'grade' of choice for all of these really ridiculous and outlandish 'experiments' or whatever one wants to call it???? That's just how I see it.

Kindergarten rhyming book stirs controversy

What parent out there does NOT want their child to read books? The education value in reading is far greater than anything I can think of really. Sure, there's all those other basics that must be attained as far as an education, I of course realize this. But this to me is just not reading material for 5 year olds if you ask me.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Take my advice, Pull down your pants And slide on the ice;" and

"Girls are dandy, made out of candy. Boys are rotten, made out of cotton. Girls go to Mars to get candy bars. Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider".

Of course the committee that chose this book finds it beneficial...it teaches the kids how to rhyme. And again, rhyming definately benefits the child's interest level and aids in the education as well. No argument from me!

But why such crudeness and disrespect needs to be part of that education is beyond me! Kids will learn 'schoolyard rhymes'. My kids came home saying those and many new ones I had never heard and they learned them from their friends...something I consider to be a NATURAL process but I see nothing natural or beneficial with this sort of handout. What exactly is it that is considered an education these days?????

I read many types of books to my daycare kids. Stories, rhyming, songs but I also screen for what is acceptable as far as respectful and educational. When I was younger, I read Mother Goose, whatever happened to good ole Mother Goose????

I have managed to find books that teach manners, morals, values, safety, numbers, letters, and included in all of that are the giggles of the kids as I get goofy and make the story fun. I guess I just don't get it. How people, supposed 'adults', can read these rhymes about boys being stupider and taking off your pants to slide on the ice, or whatever it is and say that it's appropriate reading for kids, especially kids of such a young age.

Man, what is it going to be like when my kids have kids? Will there be any discretion or careful planning as far as things such as this.

I guess I could jump on board and say this, "as long as they're reading what's the harm"... I just won't go there.
