More about bats....

Whew, no sign of the bat since that night thank God! Of course that brought to mind a memory for me. Gee what doesn't.

I have mentioned a cabin that we used to go to when I was growing up. I actually have oodles of fond memories from that place aside from the fact that it was also the place that spawned the many pains and memories that lurk as well.

Anyway, this cabin was a 3 room place, 2 bedrooms and then the kitchen and living area were all one, with a standing heater in it. I cannot remember if it was propane or what but anyway, it had a chimney. And yes, BATS! I only remember a couple of times that this happened but the images I have of it have forever been ingrained in my head.

Brooms! We would be getting ready to go to sleep at night, my brothers and I camped out in the living area snug in our sleeping bags, and all hell would break loose. Out of the chimney area a bat would squeak out and begin flying in it's circles. An adult would be armed with a broom while another would be standing at the door ready to open it to get that bat out.

Me? Well, I would be curled up in my sleeping bag with a hole just big enough for one eye to pop out and watch this fiasco. (kind of similar to the fetal position I assumed the other night underneath baby toys) My brother just recently told me about how our other brother wouldn't let him out of the sleeping bag to watch what was going on. He apparently shoved him down into the bag and held it shut and wouldn't let him out. I laughed when he told me that. But because I was so busy hiding, I never cared what those two were doing. For all I knew they were sitting there waiting for the thing to land on them or something or talking about the flight pattern. For me? It was each man for himself!!!

I don't remember which adult it was but at one time or another, I was told that bats like to get stuck in hair. And my hair was down to my butt and thick! To this day whenever I see a bat or hear one my first reaction is and has always been to throw my arms up over my head and duck! Hence my fear of bats. I don't know how true it is really but being that they are blind, I could see it happening that way, one swoops down and inadvertantly swoops to ones hair and gets all tangled.....eeeeeeeew!

Anyway, as I would lay there peeking out from my little eye hole, I would watch my dad with the broom swinging at the bat trying to divert it towards the door as well as ducking down when the bat would get too close to his head. And I remember being terrified. Too many horror movies as a little girl I think, vampires, rabies....

Eventually, somehow, some way they would get that bat to fly out the door without even touching it. Sometimes it would take quite awhile and it would sure get hot under that sleeping bag. But at least I was safe...whew!

We've been blessed with many different kinds of critters in this house, one in which was a tale that I completely forgot about and warrants a post, while others are just your average everyday visitors when living out in the country. However, bats? Well, that is most definately one that I can live without, even if they are harmless, they belong right up there with June Bugs in my oogly book!
