Part III Last camping entry

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Well, after a few days to soak up the high gas prices, all the liberal crap that irks me beyond belief and getting back into the old routine of life again, I will finish up my camping story.

I would have to say that the dogs were the highlight of the entire week then the racoons. By Sunday afternoon, we had the entire campground to ourselves. That is a lot of empty campsites to look at but wow, was it quiet. Spooky too. Bears are a common occurence so needless to say, I was on pins and needles quite often after dark. Yes, I'm a scare-dee cat. So, whatcha gonna do about it.

I didn't take any pictures of our campsite and such. It seemed as though there was always something to do, that I was constantly busy. At times I would stop and ask if I was truly on vacation or if I was just punishing myself with extra work because it seemed that the minute I would sit to relax, something else would need to be done. But it was a 'good' busy, a welcome busy, an unnecessary busy that was done happily.

I did take photos of my mysterious children though. I decided last year that I was going to start taking their school photos as I am not one for the standard, sit with your back straight head tilted slightly boring institutionalized photos. They just make me ill to look at as they are just not my kids at all. And to top it off, we get our money's worth. So an entire day was dedicated to this. And it was well worth it. I will try to post them later as I am not savvy in that department, I leave that to Patrick.

Most days were spent fishing with our two youngest. Our boy is absolutely all about the outdoors as I'm sure most boys are. At the middle of the day, he reminded me of 'Pigpen' in Charlie Brown he would be so filthy. And he sure loves to fish. He would rather catch those little minnows than anything worth looking at.

Our girls spent the week running around, waking each morning to scout out any new arrivals for some kids to start up games of volleyball or soccer. They had pretty good success. There were roughly 3 really big soccer games played with Pat included while I sat and watched the dogs. One game in particular there were a group of boys who played hockey and they were really quite rough. My two older daughters got knocked off their feet, literally, a few times, wind knocked out of them, and loved every minute of it. I chalked it up as teenage hormones, which is a whole other entry but will refrain. It amazed me how tough they really are.

Our youngest daughter played it safe and played goalie most of the time but there were a few times she ventured out and even scored a couple of goals.

The boy, well, he simply didn't care that most of the people playing were 2 feet taller than him. He would run into the fray and go for that ball and didn't give a damn if he got trampled. Me, well, I sat on pins and needles. Pat kept trying to give the little guy the opportunity to take the ball and run with it but those larger kids just didn't seem to grasp the concept of allowing the little ones a moment in the spot light. They would just come and steal that ball like nothing.

Over all, our kids had a lot of fun, caused us very minimal grief as they were free to run around the campground and disappear for hours.

Aside from all the cleaning, restocking of ice, rearranging of coolers and food bins, the trip was yet another successful and memorable one.

Our oldest daughter managed on a couple of occasions to scare the crap out of both Pat and myself, she is quite the joker and loves good times and laughter.

One other downfall though were the girls' damn cell phones. We made a rule that next year, those things are banned from any future camping trips. I don't know why we allowed them in the first place but it is yet another lesson well learned.

We talked all week about how next year, we will hopefully be able to purchase a pop-up camper although I am a firm believer in tents. But our backs are getting old and unable to withstand a week of sleeping on air mattress' that don't always hold the air. And also, hopefully we will be able to put our dogs in doggie-daycare for our vacation. But this is a long way off.

I want to thank you all for visiting and wishing us a warm welcome home. Jenn, you have a spectacular trip.
